Government out of control

As the Federal Government has grown into an insatiable monster it has become less representative of the people.  Today Senators and Congressmen permit our government to be run by bureaucrats and staff members who owe their allegiance to their employers (the Federal Government) rather than to the citizens of this country.  So, how do our legislators spend their time?  Do you remember the old cliche that a politician's first priority is to get re-elected?  It's true.  Our legislators spend the majority of their time on the business of raising campaign contributions so they can retain their cushy jobs.

An Eagle Unchained, the manuscript I'm currently writing, deals with solutions for a multitude of problems that are destroying America.  The main character, Theodore Winston Hale, is a successful business man who creates the American Party to run for President.  The first item on his agenda is a Constitutional Amendment to create term limits for Senators and Congressmen.  Both Ted Hale and I believe term limits will be a major step in returning control of the government to the people.

The founding fathers established our government as a democratic Republic with two houses of congress; the House of Representatives to represent the general population of each State, and the Senate to represent the interests of the States themselves.  This two house system was designed to control the tendency of a central government to grow too powerful.  A democratic Republic is a confederation of States, ruled by law, with a weak central government.  The division of Congress, with one house representing the people and one house representing the States, was eliminated when the 17th Amendment to the Constitution was adopted in 1913, mandating the direct election of Senators.  Since then, with no one in the Federal Government to represent the States, the Federal bureaucracy has grown into an insatiable monster that controls the States rather than the States controlling the central government.

In my next post I'll discuss why term limits for Senators and Congressmen will make the legislators more responsive to the people and eliminate the need to devote their time to soliciting campaign contributions.

What do you think?  Are your Federal legislators representing you, or are they consuming our resources for their own selfish goals?
